The Planning Starts
My original plan was to bicycle, with an e-bike, the California Missions Trail Walk. I delayed this plan with another idea of touring the Southwestern National Parks. Then along came the idea of hiking the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail). With starts and stops for both plans, my lofty goals didn’t work. I did get to see Grand Canyon National Park, but the other parks eluded me, due to no vacancy in hotels surrounding the parks. I next took the train to San Diego to hike the PCT. I lasted three days until I decided camping and no showers were not for me. I also had an intestinal problem that made going to the bathroom on the trail miserable.
The California Mission Walk is going to be my American Camino. It’s not set up the way the Camino de Santiago is in Spain. There are no alberques and it is an unmarked trail. It is, in some ways, similar. It is an 800 mile route. There is a California Missions Trail group. There is even a passport to be stamped at each mission. During my research, I’ve already met online, some very helpful and knowledgeable people. I’m sure the information I’ve already gained from them will become invaluable during my trek to visit all of the California Missions.
