The Jeanne Marie sailing in Port Gardner |
Our Saturday sail this week was with Mark’s cousin Dana! He was still in jet lag from Shanghai China, but was in great form. We were thrilled to see him. Unfortunately, Kathy couldn’t join us and was missed. We hope to see her soon.
The temperatures are staying nice for the weekends for sailing. Normally I would complain about the warm weather, but not this year. We are taking advantage of every sunny weekend to sail. In fact, it was rather toasty again. It was in the low to mid 80’s, I believe. There wasn’t a lot of wind for sailing, but we made the most of the wind we had. We hit a dead zone south of Hat Island, so the motor was turned on for a few minutes until we were in the wind again. The boat hit a maximum speed of 5 knots today and a minimum of 0 knots. It was a very calm and relaxing day. Perfect for Dana to get out on the farthest bow seat to take pictures and movies. The first time I sat in that seat, the day of the test sail, I thought of Dana and how much he would enjoy it.
Today was a red letter day for me. It was the first time I ever raised the mainsail completely alone. Well not completely alone, but I did the winch all by myself. So I’m counting it. It’s very difficult because the sail is so large. I got my arm workout in for the day. Mark usually does the majority of the work on the sails and I want to do my part.
Another sailboat took a picture of the Jeanne Marie under sail today. At the end of the day, while we were “running”, we were close to another sailboat doing the same thing. Running is a sailing term when the wind is coming from behind. I took their picture and yelled (good thing I have a loud, clear voice) over to ask them if they would like me to send it to their cell phone. They were delighted by the idea and did the same for us. Hence, the great picture of our sailboat under sail.
We saw sea lions sunning themselves on the buoys as we left and entered the harbor. Got some great pictures. Joe barked at them. I’m not sure what he said, but they answered back. They were probably swearing at him for disrupting their sleep or possibly passing along double secret information about the Everett Navy Base since they are right beside it! Who knew Joe could talk sea lion? Maybe he learned the top secret language while under the sea in the submarines…
We served lunch on the sail and dinner when we got back to the dock. We had a wonderful time seeing Dana again. So glad he could come along on this sail. We loved chatting with him and catching up again. We missed Kathy and Dana since they’ve been on their grand adventure in China. It was another fantastic day sailing in the Puget Sound waters aboard the Jeanne Marie.
Dana filmed a video of our sailing afternoon. It was too long to post here. I was able to upload it to YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LunWpk34g0k

This time the sails are up. Notice how much Dana is behind the helm? Maybe that’s why Mark invited him… |
