Edmonds Sailing Trip on Puget Sound

Went to my 5K running class at 8:00am.  I was tired from my 10 mile walk on the previous day so I didn’t do too well.  I’m disappointed in myself.  I’m seriously doubting I will be able to jog 3 miles without walking.  I’m not sure how to handle this but this week I am going to walk my long walk on Wednesday.

Our Edmonds sailing trip started from home about 10:30.  The day started out sunny but cool.  It was in the low sixties when I was jogging and warmed up slightly from there.  The day was mostly cloudy but the sun peaked out occaisionally.  We decided to pick up a few snacks at Thriftway as we left the house. Coconut M&M’s were a last second impulse purchase.  Since they were chocolate and I didn’t want them to melt on the sailboat, I decided to open the package in the car.  I offered one to Mark and he took it.  After tasting a single M&M he acted like I was trying to poison him.  I’m very surprised he didn’t scrape the candy out of his mouth.  He complained loudly and for a very long time about it’s taste.  In other words, Mark acted like a 2 year old.  But I don’t remember Alyssa or Sarah ever acting that way over the way something tastes.  Not a good way to start our fun day…
Harvey welcoming us to our sailing day
We had made another stop at West Marine store to pick up an anchor lightbulb and another tide table.  It was low-tide and the metal walkway had quite a tilt to it.  Our first agenda item was to fill the motor fuel tank.  It holds 3 gallons and we hadn’t filled it since the start of our Langley weekend.  Harvey, the harbor seal, was waiting on his yellow buoy to welcome us to the start of our sailing day.  There was a respectable amount of wind blowing.  Mark decided since it was blowing from the south our easiest course would be to get close to Whidbey Island and sail down to Edmonds by tacking back and forth.  We motored out to Mukilteo and started tacking.  After tacking a couple of hours, Mark decided we should probably motor the rest of the way to Edmonds.  The wind was constantly blowing but it would take us many more hours to tack back and forth before we would reach Edmonds.

We had fun finding the different landmarks on the coast that we had perused on the navigational charts.  We sailed down to Picnic Point.  Picnic Point Elementary is in the area.  Alyssa and Sarah had attended this school when we lived in the Harbour Pointe area of Mukilteo.  From Picnic Point on, we had a good view of Edmonds.  It was still a few miles away but we were able to clearly see the Edmonds to Kingston ferries.

We were also able to see the southern tip of  Whidbey Island.  The water was so smooth on Puget Sound.  Since it was cloudy the water appeared a grayish blue-green.  Little pattens appeared in the smooth water reminded me of a paisley pattern.  In the future I hope to use this inspiration in a quilting pattern on my nautical quilts.

Fueling at Edmonds Marina

Sailing into Edmonds was fun because there was so much to see.  The ferry was still being loaded so we were able to get a great shot of it. We fueled up and found it cost about $3.50 for us to motor most of the way to Edmonds from Everett.  Not bad considering the stories we’ve heard from the motorboats is that it cost around $100 a day for a day of fun.

Waiting for the check at Anthony’s Beach Cafe
The port of Edmonds is landscaped with beautiful flowers.  Everywhere you looked it’s picturesque.  We had a nice early dinner at Anthony’s Beach Cafe.  We were able to eat outside.  Chloe was included and stayed under the table waiting for something to drop.  Unfortunately for her, nothing fell on the ground.  After eating while waiting for the bill we gave her a few calamari.  In Chloe’s usual fashion, she gobbled it in one bite and didn’t taste it.
Leaving the Edmonds marina
We left the Edmonds marina around 5:00 pm.  Since it was so late and the wind had changed direction, Mark decided we should motor most of the way home.  We both like to be under sail so this was a bit of disappointment.  We love the serene calmness of silently gliding through the water.  A little while after departing Edmonds the skies clouded up and the water got choppy.  It was around this time that we saw three cruise ships off in the distance.  Chloe was getting a bit huffy for her dinner so we fed her.  In hindsight, we should have fed her early and pottied her again before we left.  She later got a bit huffy again, but we were within sight of Everett so it wasn’t too bad.  We also got to see two harbor porpoises swimming through the water.  It was thrilling to see them.  We’ve seen others up in Possesion Sound and I hope to capture them on film someday.

Mark sailed us close to the Mukilteo shore so I was able to get a few pictures.  I have been anxious to see the lighthouse from the water.  When Alyssa and Sarah were younger we went on a field trip to the lighthouse and were able to climb to the top.  We also fished and crabbed from the Mukilteo pier.

It was right after this picture my camera battery died or the camera didn’t have any more memory.  Not sure which it was but I couldn’t take any more pictures.  Harvey, the harbor seal, or one of his cousins was lying on the green buoy outside of the Everett Naval Station welcoming us back home.  The sunset in the pictures looks striking but it was even more glorious afterwards.  We turned on the sailboat running lights for the first time and docked in the twilight.  The sky was a deep pink and could not have been more magnificent.  A splendid ending to the day.

I used to take Liam to lighthouse park and beach in Mukilteo, he loved it because of all the rocks!
