Today’s sail turned out to be an unexpected “leisure” day on the sailboat. Not really. We had planned on going out early to see the tall wooden ships, Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, do mock battle in Port Gardner. Unfortunately, the engine wouldn’t start because of a dead battery. Previously, Mark had wanted to spend some time on the boat with Joe to figure out the wiring systems so this was a perfect opportunity.
The Fresh Paint Art Festival is at the marina this weekend so it was bustling with people and interesting things to look at. While Mark and Joe worked on the sailboat, I was able to go on a tour of the Hawaiian Chieftain. One of the most fascinating people I met was the chef in the galley. When I asked if I could take his picture, he told me it had to be under the clock. Turns out the same clock was in the galley on the USS Missouri in WWII and his uncle served on that ship. His uncle’s name was Chief Petty Officer Floyd Dobbs, they called him Snookie. He was worried about his bread falling during the kamikaze flights because the bread would fall from rising due to the gun action. The crew is a volunteer group for a two week trek. Should I abandon my husband and set my sails for a fun filled adventure with pirates and sailors for sailing the Puget Sound waters?
OMG Mark just signed up for a two week cruise! Just kidding!!!! 🙂
