First Sail of the 2012 Sailing Season
Easter Sunday was our first sail of the 2012 sailing season. We invited Joe to sail with us and meet at the boat at 1:00. Mark had gone to the boat on Saturday to attach the mainsail and check the motor since it hadn’t been started since last October. Anyway – the boat was ready for us to sail and sail we did. The weather started with light clouds and the sun peeked through occasionally. After an hour the sun stayed out and warmed up. It was enough to give us a light sunburn. Around 3:30 we began to see distinctive whale spouts spraying in the distance. Then we saw a grey whale breach! It was extremely exciting. This is the first whale we saw breach the water. It was humongous. The only live whales I’ve seen have been in aquariums. We saw whale spouts last year by La Conner and also on our Alaskan cruise but never saw a breach. Sailing season has begun with a bang.
