Whale of a Tale

Our sailboat adventure yesterday started smoothly gliding out of our new boat slip into the harbor.  There was no blood pressure rising because of the boat motor conking out and no waving of the push/pull poles as we are try to stop our boat from damaging nearby boats.  We had utter peace and harmony because two wonderful boating things have happened this season.  One – we are now paying $13 more a month for our boat slip and two – Mark, by almost accident, has figured out why the boat motor would stall when he switched from forward to reverse.  Turns out there are two settings to forward fast and slow!

Dana and Kathy joined us on today’s adventure.  For a while, there wasn’t much wind so we motored a bit and sailed a bit.  We headed out towards the southern tip of Gedney (Hat) Island because someone in the harbor told us there was a whale sighting.  We weren’t really expecting to see anything since we had our whale adventure/sighting two weeks prior and thought we were incredibly lucky then.  I spotted the first whale spout.  I yelled “Sprout” and everyone laughed but Mark knew what I meant.  All of a sudden a whale was breaching 50 yards ahead of our bow.  There were two whales.  This was one of the most exciting sailboat trips we had.  According to the Everett Herald, the grey whales that come to Possession Sound show up to eat shrimp in April and May.

This was our first whale sighting of the day.  Dana was able to capture it on film.
