10 Miles

Today was a 10 mile training walk for the Seattle Marathon.  My total time was 2 hours and 47 minutes.  According to my marathon training schedule it is supposed to be a long, slow walking endurance day so I’m not worried about time.

It also counted for a 10 mile Virtual Run on Labor Day weekend that I am participating in.  It’s a cool idea and this is the race bib for the run.   http://www.mommyrunfast.com/labordayvirtualrun/   I wish the leaves in Seattle look like the race bib picture.  Alas, it’s too early in the season in Seattle.   Besides, I would have to go the arboretum or up to the mountains for this many deciduous trees.  We are not known as the Evergreen State for nothing.

I walked the first 5 miles with Terri around the neighborhood.  It took us 95 minutes.  We started our walk at 8:00 am because we are trying to avoid the heat.  Cloudy skies and cool temperatures were the theme of the morning.  Very nice walking weather.  The sun was just starting to peak out of the clouds as we finished the last two blocks.

Today I noticed there were plastic geranium flowers planted in a flowerbed.  It’s too funny and I had to take a picture.  I’ve walked past this house at least a hundred-plus times, yet this is the first time I noticed plastic flowers.  Who knows, maybe they were put in recently, I should be more observant.

The next 5 miles were ran/walked on the treadmill. After a 5 minute warm-up I ran 3 minutes and walked 1 minute repeated throughout most of the next 5 miles. I did take a 5 minute walk break somewhere in the middle.  The total time on the treadmill was 72 minutes.  I was originally going to walk/run this marathon but I’m waffling between the run/walk training schedule and the walk/run schedule.  I know my first 5 miles are going to be walked because I decided my long endurance day is going to be on Mondays.  Every Monday I walk with Terri for 5 miles, and there is no way she will jog, so I’m always going to walk the first 5 miles.  So for now, I am going to walk the first 5 miles, and run/walk the rest of the miles on my training walks.  Who knows what my finishing time will be this year at the Seattle Marathon.

I watched the third episode of the 1978 Dallas series.  I’ll now have to wait at least three days for the next dvd from Netflix.  The time speeds by watching this series.

I am so impressed with walk-runners and run-walkers... it takes a lot of endurance to be out there longer. I can't remember the last time I walked more than 2-3 miles! Awesome job- thanks so much for participating! Oh- and unfortunately there is no medal for the virtual run, just possible prizes... maybe I should look into medals for next year!

I agree with Laura. Walking distance is hard!

I loved the idea of running at 8:00 to beat the heat. I have to run by 6:00 and I still can't beat it. Nice job on your 10 miler!

Hi Debbie - Thanks for the compliment. I MELT in the heat so it's a good thing I live in the Pacific Northwest.

Maria - The flowers looked very realistic. Unfortunately, the leaves were a shade off a natural color. They might have faded for all I know. I need to be more observant. :)
