16 Mile Marathon Training Run

Today I completed 16 miles in 3:29:04.  It really was a lot longer if you counted all the times I stopped for pictures and the travel between destinations.  The first 6 3/4 miles were in Marysville.  Second leg of the run, 7 miles, was the northernmost part of the Centennial Trail.  I then finished the last 2 1/4 miles again in Marysville.

I was apprehensive about this 16 mile marathon training run.  All week long I had been bothered by IT band, knee, and just general pain in my right leg and foot.  Due to the pain, I had cancelled scheduled workouts with both Tracy and Terry.  I felt bad about it, but I knew I needed to if I hoped to complete my scheduled run.  So Friday was my only running day.  It was slightly painful but I was able to complete it.

I have been rereading Jeff Galloway’s book on Marathons and decided to employ his walking intervals into my runs to see if it would help my IT band pain.  I ran 3 minutes and walked 1 minute throughout the entire 16 miles.  I also slowed my pace down like he recommended.  Long slow distance!

The ibuprofen I took Friday didn’t seem to help, so today I tried Tylenol.  It worked better for me.  I had pain but it was more manageable than Friday.  I also consumed Shot Blok and 2 Peanut Butter GU during the run along with Gatorade.  I still need to work on my nutrition.
